BAMA and LAWR Name Trafford Council Winner of A Can Do Awards 2010

16/06/2010

The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) and  LAWR (Local Authority Waste and Recycling Magazine) have announced Trafford Council as the winner of ‘The Can Do Awards 2010’ for running the best recycling communication campaign that includes empty aerosols.

The announcement was made at a seminar run by the joint contest sponsors and held at Futuresource, Europe’s leading sustainability event, on the 16th June 2010.  The seminar, held in London, included presentations by the Director of BAMA and the Editor of LAWR magazine as well as a case study from last year’s ‘Can Do Awards’ winner, Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The event highlighted best practice in encouraging householders to recycle the estimated 600 million empty aerosols used by consumers in the UK each year.

Council representatives attended the seminar along with press, other Local Authorities and waste management companies. Trafford Council was awarded an engraved trophy and a framed certificate whilst runner up, South Derbyshire District Council, was commended and received a framed certificate.  Both Councils will be featured in LAWR magazine and on the BAMA website.

The Can Do Awards form part of a long-term and highly successful campaign initiated by BAMA. Since 2001 the proportion of Local Authorities which include empty aerosols for recycling has significantly improved from approximately 7 per cent to 75 per cent now.

Sue Rogers, Director of BAMA, explains: “We have been searching for the best local authority recycling campaign that includes empty aerosols for the second year of the ‘Can Do Awards’. We are so glad that we have been able to partner with LAWR magazine to help make this part of our campaign such a success and we thank them for their support.  Recycling success depends on communicating to local residents and local authorities, and at our seminar we revealed some of the innovative ways Councils such as Trafford and Bradford Metropolitan Council are doing just that.  This year, the Trafford campaign was voted the best by the judges as it has been well researched, clearly and visually executed through a wide variety of communication routes.”

LAWR magazine’s Editor, Maxine Perella, said: “We were particularly impressed that Trafford Council achieved the highest recycling rate (44%) of all districts in Greater Manchester and that they also exceeded their target set at 34%”.

The campaigns entered for the award could be of any size and in any format, whether in the form of an online video, web-based initiative or printed promotional leaflet or flyer.  Entries were judged on educational merit, creativity and reach of the campaign in relation to the budget. Finalist judges were Sue Rogers, Director of BAMA and Maxine Perella, Editor of LAWR magazine.

BAMA continues to encourage and offer practical assistance to local authorities, retailers, waste companies and other interested parties by providing materials, information and guidance on how  aerosols, once the consumer has used them up, can be recycled with other metal packaging, successfully reducing the amount of  material going to landfill.
