BAMA REPORTS AN INCREASE IN FILLING FIGURES - 2007 data now released

11/06/2008

Aerosol filling figures remained robust in 2007, according to the latest data from industry body, BAMA (British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association) released today (11 June 2008).  The UK aerosol filling figures for the last reporting year saw an overall rise of 2.7%, an increase of 33.5 million cans over the previous year. In 2006, 1225.6 aerosol cans were filled in the UK increasing to 1259.1 last year*.

Sue Rogers, Director of BAMA, said: “This rise in overall fillings is a notable achievement for the UK aerosol industry as some companies have moved their filling operations overseas and, of course, 2007 saw the start of consumers spending less through high street retailers. Our industry is robust and the UK’s reputation for excellence is ensuring that the industry goes from strength to strength – a pleasing situation as 2008 marks the 80th birthday of the UK aerosol patent”.

Personal care products remain the single largest sector; this category includes deodorants, body sprays, hair and shaving products, suntan and bronzing, fragrances and other personal care aerosols. Of these, the single largest is deodorants, body sprays and anti-perspirants which have risen by 5.5% from 572 the previous year to 603.2 million units filled in the UK in 2007.  There has also been a significant (5%) rise in the production of air fresheners – a growth driven by innovation and, in particular, by time-released products.

The aerosol market is highly international which means that product filling can move around Europe – and indeed outside – relatively frequently.  There were some significant moves of filling for internal company reasons during 2007; despite these, fillings of aerosol products overall are holding strong, a testament to the inherent strength of the UK industry.

Aerosols continue to succeed with retailers and with consumers as they are widely recognised to offer an efficient and effective dispense method whilst being environmentally-sound as they are recyclable. BAMA has done much to promote the recycling of used, empty aerosols educating both the public and local authorities about the ease with which they can be recycled as part of the mix of other household metal waste.
