BAMA UPDATES ITS POST CONSUMER AEROSOL GUIDE

17/11/2008

BAMA, the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association, has updated its ‘Best Practice Guide’ for the recycling of empty post-consumer aerosols recovered through material recycling facilities (MRFs) and includes revisions on: Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR) as well as Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).  The Guide also includes information on risk assessment and a useful frequently asked questions section.

Recovered aerosols make a valuable contribution to metal recycling and over seventy-five per cent of UK local authorities now include empty post-consumer aerosols in their recycling schemes.  This new guide updates nearly 10 years of Health & Safety experience recycling aerosols and includes a practical assessment by an experienced independent health and safety expert.

The advice in the Guide should be used in conjunction with a MRFs own safety policy which should ensure that  the standards set to be achieved are implemented, monitored and reviewed over time.  The MRFs safety policy should also ensure that the operating standards and other controls over any risks identified are regularly monitored.  The study, which was published in a peer reviewed journal, established that by taking some basic precautions to control risks, empty aerosols may be included in the household waste recycling stream.

A copy of the revised BAMA ‘Best Practice Guide’ for the recycling of empty post-consumer aerosols recovered through material reclamation facilities (MRFs) is available from BAMA.

For your FREE copy of the Guide, telephone BAMA on 020 7828 5111. e-mail: enquiries@bama.co.uk, or visit the BAMA website at www.bama.co.uk.
