We have received the attached guide from BEIS on the implementation of Test and Trace for Employers with the covering information detailed below:

 

Attached is a Q&A pack for employers on Test and Trace produced by the Department of Health & Social Care and the NHS Test and Trace team.

  • The update has removed any reference to CNI and national security work environments and replaced it with ‘any setting where there is a risk of a local outbreak’.
  • There is now a specific section on ‘contact with co-workers’ which states:

“If any of those close contacts are co-workers, the person who has developed symptoms may wish to (but is not obliged to) ask their employer to alert those co-workers. At this stage, those close contacts should not self-isolate,

but they:

      • must avoid individuals who are at high-risk of contracting COVID-19, for example, because they have pre-existing medical conditions, such as respiratory issues
      • must take extra care in practising social distancing and good hygiene and in watching out for symptoms
      • will be better prepared if the person who has symptoms has a positive test result and if they (the contact) receive a notification from the NHS test and trace service explaining they need to self-isolate”

 

Similarly, ‘If there is more than one case of COVID-19 associated with a workplace, employers should contact their local health protection team to report the suspected outbreak.’ This information can be found via the link: Find your local health protection team.

 

DHSC recognise that employers’ main concern is that Test and Trace will mean more of their workforce will have to self-isolate. It is important to note however that if a worker tests positive then co-workers will not automatically be deemed a contact and told to self-isolate. It is only if they have been in close recent contact (<1 metre for 1 minute, or <2 metres for 15 minutes) with someone who has tested positive. It is therefore crucial that employers implement social distancing wherever possible and follow the BEIS working safely guidelines. If workers are kept socially distant from one another then they will not be classed as contacts and will not need to self-isolate.
